Often called uncut or untrimmed edges, deckle edges are a topic of some confusion and debate in the book world. Once largely unavoidable and probably annoying, the pages are now a conscious design choice, and while some are for it, and some are against it, a lot of people are just confused by it.
In Japan and China, these edges were trimmed off. When it was brought over to Europe, deckle edges were also unlikely to survive the binding process. If they weren’t cut off by the paper maker, they were usually trimmed by the binder.
Some binders were so zealous about this that book were left with almost no margins at all. Uncut pages are those which have not been given smooth edges or trimmed as part of book manufacturing process. (See deckle edges, trimmed pages, and cut pages below.) Deckle edges.
